Oil on canvas proof that some things never change. Der lästige Kavalier by Berthold Woltze in 1874. A woman on a train being harassed by a neckbeard.
Often translated as The Irritating Gentleman, it should be noted that the German word lästige is quite a bit stronger than irritating and would probably better as annoying or something stronger. As for Kavalier, it is frequently translated as “gentlemen”, but it had a lecherous undertone.
I’ll forever refer to it as The Obnoxious Asshole in oil on canvas.
